Alexander
Alexander, the King of Macedonia, after his victory over Iran turned towards India.
In 326 BC, he attacked the north-west part of the country. King Porus made
preparations to resist the invader. But Alexander gathered his forces on the left
bank of the Jhelum. He crossed the Jhelum and made a surprise attack on Porus.
King Porus fought bravely, but was seriously wounded and taken prisoner. When
produced before Alexander Porus said he should be treated like a king, who fought
for his motherland. Alexander admired Porus’ courage and gave back his kingdom,
and made him a friend and ally.
Alexander planned to march forward. He crossed the Chenab and Ravi rivers and advanced up to the
Beas. But the areas conquered by him rose in revolt. His soldiers also refused to go any further as the
territory beyond the Beas was ruled by mighty Nanda emperor. With a heavy heart he began his return
journey. That was in 325 BC. A year later he died in Babylon.
