Preface






                Man cannot live without society, so it is essential for a child to learn how he can lead a
            happy, contented, prosperous and meaningful life. The present series of books—Contemporary
            Social Science  , for classes I to VIII has been written to meet these purposes specifically, under
            the broad guidelines as prescribed by the NCERT and CBSE.

                In an effort to assist children ‘to understand that a healthy engagement with the world
            must come as much from the way society takes shape and functions as from a proper sense of

            its material and physical foundations’, this series has been formulated to enable the students
            to have a direct, healthy and purposeful engagement with the world. Keeping in with this
            objective, adequate provisions have been made in the books, in each lesson, to bring the
            students in direct touch with the topic under study, so that they not only learn the essence of
            each aspect of the society and world, but also assimilate in themselves the understanding how
            closely they are related with the society, country and world.

                To add a further fillip to this understanding, the book uses an easy-to-understand language,
            explanations of terminology, abundant colourful illustrations and additional activity and facts
            that will go a long way in creating a niche in the subtle minds of the young learners. The books

            have been properly graded as per the norms as suggested by child psychologists and
            educationists, conforming with the maxims and laws of learning. A special feature of the books
            is the interaction that a child will be expected to have with the topic, peers and those outside
            the classroom. Moreover, periodic assessments and term examinations, as prescribed by the
            CBSE, have been incorporated at adequate places. Thus, holistic learning lies at the root of
            these books.

                The books have been written by a team of experts, headed by the author, who himself is a
            well-known name in children’s books. Any suggestions for improvement are always welcome

            and, if found adequate, will be incorporated in the further editions of the books.
